Protect the working space on a small counter

Store around the task that happens there most often.

Choose the counter task that deserves priority: preparing dinner, making coffee or washing dishes. Clear a continuous patch large enough to complete that task comfortably. A collection of small empty gaps does not work as well as one uninterrupted area, especially when a cutting board or hot pan needs a stable place.

Move items that you use occasionally into accessible storage, then group the daily items at the edge of the working zone. Keep wet equipment away from plugs and follow appliance clearance instructions. Do not use a decorative shelf to defeat the ventilation requirements of a heat-producing appliance.

Before buying a rack or another appliance, mark its footprint with paper and leave the paper in place through a normal day. Include space for opening lids, removing trays and cleaning behind it. A compact product still needs operating room. If it blocks the main task, a smaller version or no new purchase is preferable. Reassess after a week rather than treating the first layout as permanent.
